How it works
Volume is bed area times depth: cubic feet = sq ft × depth in inches ÷ 12, the method in Home Depot's mulch guide, which states that a cubic foot of mulch covers 12 sq ft at about a 1 in depth. Bags round up to whole bags at the size you choose; bulk is the same volume in cubic yards (27 cu ft per yard). The cross-check: at 3 in deep a 2 cu ft bag covers exactly 8 sq ft, the figure on both the Home Depot conversion chart and the Vigoro bag listing.

Questions
How much mulch do I need for 500 sq ft?
At a 3 in depth, 500 sq ft needs 125 cu ft of mulch — 63 standard 2 cu ft bags, or 4.63 cubic yards in bulk. (Home Depot's mulch guide method: sq ft × depth in inches ÷ 12 = cu ft.)
How much does one bag of mulch cover?
A 2 cu ft bag covers 8 sq ft at a 3 in depth — stated independently by the Home Depot Mulch Conversion Chart and the Vigoro product page. At 1 in deep the same bag covers 24 sq ft, computed from the guide's basis of 12 sq ft per cu ft at 1 in.
How deep should mulch be?
Home Depot's mulch guide recommends a 2- to 4-inch layer. Shallower than 2 in lets weeds through; much deeper can smother roots.
